Cosmological Argument
- Every being is dependent or self-existent.
- If every being is dependent, we have either an unexplained
infinite regress or an unexplained circle of dependent beings.
- We don’t have an unexplained infinite regress of dependent
beings.
- We don’t have an unexplained circle of dependent beings.
- So, not every being is dependent.
- So, there is a self-existent being.
Rowe’s Worry
Premises 1 and 3 depend on the Principle of Sufficient
Reason (PSR): every positive fact has an explanation.
Della Rocca’s Argument
- Either (a) all the explicability arguments are bad, or (b)
there is a dividing line between good and bad ones, or (c) all of the
explicability arguments are good.
- If all the explicability arguments are good, the existence
argument is good.
- If the existence argument is good, the PSR is true.
- Not all the explicability arguments are bad.
- There is no dividing line between good and bad ones.
- So, all the explicability arguments are good. (1, 4 and 5)
- So, the existence argument is good. (2, 6)
- So, the PSR is true (3, 7)
